What is the Veiled Christ?
The Veiled Christ is a life-size marble sculpture of the dead Christ lying beneath a translucent shroud. Both the body and the veil were carved from a single block of marble by the Neapolitan sculptor Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753, commissioned by Prince Raimondo di Sangro as the centrepiece of his family chapel. The realism of the veil is so extreme that early visitors believed the prince — an alchemist — had turned a real cloth into stone. He hadn’t: it is all one piece of marble. Antonio Canova reportedly said he would give ten years of his life to have carved it.
